We have all come to accept that over time, even our favorite gadgets wear out. Phone screens get scratched or cracked, laptop batteries fizzle out and die, and cords get twisted or frayed. Buying new cords or batteries just delays the inevitable. By the time all this sets in, your device memory is probably full anyway from too many "important" pictures and endless i-message group-text bombs. But I found that there is some hope as my husband's i-phone battery could no longer recharge and he was about to throw it out for a new model. The fix is easier than you think, and take ZERO tech skills!
The idea came to me as we were folding laundry. I was thinking about the lint trap in the dryer, and as I watched him tuck the turned-out pockets back into his shorts before folding them, I asked "could it be lint?" He answered that there wasn't any in the pocket, but I asked again "could there be lint in your phone, from keeping it in your pocket?" Lint anywhere can be a sensitive subject, but we continued the experiment.
We needed some tools to test the theory. I popped the cover off of his i-phone 5 and grabbed a paper clip. I bent a straight leg but kept the rest to hold onto. I then gently scooped along the side of the charging port. I could feel that I was grabbing something, and then it popped! I small wad of lint came tumbling out. NO WAY! I kept at it, and more and more followed.
My skeptical husband couldn't believe it. He had purchased new cables, and could only get the phone to charge if he used a rubber band to hold the charger in. It took him five minutes the night before to find the "sweet spot" and get the charger to work. Now was the moment of truth, would it actually charge without a fuss???
Well of course it did! Just like it was new out of the box, the phone beeped and started charging. Just another chance to get things clean without chemicals, or One-point-twenty-one-gigawatts! So now my husband is happy that his phone works, a little sad he doesn't get a new one, and really proud that I found something fun to write about!
